Super 11ís Report

A big weekend for the guys with the A Team performing magnificently by topping their group in style and then getting all the way through the Last 32 Knockout stages of the event, only to cruelly go down 6-5 in a classic final against Motherwell A.

The B Team, led by Roy Middleton, also performed creditably in finishing 2nd in their "Group of Death". Indeed they were only denied top spot by two frame differential from Clackmannan A (who they beat in their head-to-head!). Unfortunately they lost 6-1 in the Last 32 to a street-wise Kilsyth A outfit.

To give some idea of this achievement, this is the Scottish Pool Associationís flagship event, and consisted of some 48 teams of 12 drawn from over 30 leagues within Scotland. Thatís nearly 600 of the best players from around Scotland!

For the A Team, they can be justifiably proud of their performances as they won 8 out of their 10 matches with some big results (including beating current Super 15 holders and hot favourites Glasgow A in a pulsating semi-final) and the only two they lost were close at 6-5.

This result, although massively disappointing, has really put Arbroath pool on the map. A lot of SPA website members (see the various Forums sections on www.scottishpool.com) have been paying us the ultimate compliment by saying we were the best team on show this weekend, as well as tipping us as potential winners for future events.

Whilst it is unfair to single an individual out in a team context, mention must be made of the star performer for the A Team, Colin Brown, who has been rewarded for his performances by an invite to try-out for the Scotland B International Side. This is a real honour for an Arbroath player.

Many thanks to the Arbroath B players who stayed behind to watch and support the A Team in their quest and also to those who texted in and/or followed the action "live" on the SPA's website.

Special thanks to all 24 players (and also those who expressed an interest but were not ultimately selected) for committing themselves during what is proving to be exciting times for Arbroath pool. It is much appreciated and is certainly going to provide some lively debate for future team selection!
